About AIT Austrian Institute of Technology

The AIT Austrian Institute of Technology GmbH is headquartered in Vienna and describes itself as Austria's largest research and technology organisation. Its work is organised in research topics, including Cyber Security & Communication Technologies with a focus on reliable wireless communication and sensing.

AIT states that it placed an early emphasis on counter-UAV research in order to overcome the limits of ground-level perimeter protection and classical surveillance, citing the risk that commercially available drones pose to critical infrastructure.

AIT was a consortium partner of AIRlabs Austria, the FH JOANNEUM-led project (2019–2025) that set up test and trial sites for unmanned aerial systems in Austria, together with partners such as Frequentis and Schiebel. It is also a partner in UAS-CheckPoint, an FFG-funded project launched in December 2025 that develops distributed multi-sensor nodes for verifying drones in U-space.
