About Bionic System Solutions
Bionic System Solutions (BSS ApS) is based in Odense and began as a research project at the University of Southern Denmark on how reptiles detect predators and prey by sound. Its founders, Mads Helle and Gert Nielsen, combined these biological acoustic principles with machine learning. Besides defence, the company offers sensor analytics for wastewater treatment, remote asset monitoring and noise monitoring.
Its counter-UAS product BSS Komodo is a passive acoustic sensor with eight microphones and embedded processing that detects, classifies and locates drones from their acoustic signatures within a radius of up to 5 km without emitting signals. It can be networked, cue radar, RF and optical sensors and feed command-and-control systems. According to BSS, Komodo was developed in close cooperation with the Danish Defence and has been deployed in Ukraine, where it has detected fibre-optic, FPV and Shahed-type drones. The related BSS Iguana localises artillery, mortar, rocket and small-arms fire at up to 25 km.
In August 2026 the NATO Support and Procurement Agency selected a BSS-led consortium with Robin Radar Systems, CircleScope and MyDefence as one of five contractors for framework contracts for tactical and deployable counter-UAS systems. Komodo was also tested at NATO's SET-348 science and technology trial on Bornholm in 2024, and BSS participates in the European Defence Fund projects ACHILE and EISNET.
