About Rheinmetall Italia

Rheinmetall Italia S.p.A., formerly Oerlikon Contraves S.p.A., is part of the Rheinmetall Group and is based in Rome. It develops air defence systems and surveillance and tracking radars for land, naval and missile applications, and also supplies space products, civil air traffic equipment and the DEB-RA runway debris detection system.

Its X-TAR3D is a three-dimensional X-band tactical acquisition radar for short-range search, detection, tracking, classification and identification of low-flying air targets. Rheinmetall lists micro and mini UAS among the threats it addresses, alongside rockets, artillery and mortars, with instrumented ranges of up to 50 km.

In January 2025 Rheinmetall Italia received an order worth €73 million from the Italian Army for a first Skynex air defence system, configured with the X-TAR3D radar, with an option for three more systems. The first battery was handed over to the Italian Army’s air defence artillery command in Sabaudia on 18 December 2025.
