Counter-drone ammunition for assault rifles: Ukraine expands production
After testing pre-series batches from several manufacturers, Ukraine is relying on a 5.56×45 NATO cartridge for counter-drone defence. Similar ammunition is also being tested and marketed in Russia and the USA.

Ukraine will produce more counter-drone ammunition fired from 5.56×45 NATO assault rifles. Defence Minister Denis Shmyhal announced this. The Ukrainian Ministry of Defence has already tested and accepted pre-series batches from several manufacturers.
Compared with conventional full metal jacket bullets, the ammunition is said to be many times more effective against drones. According to Shmyhal, it can be fired from standard assault rifles without modification. It is said to be particularly effective at close range against tactical reconnaissance drones and first-person view (FPV) drones.

Russia and the USA are also working on counter-drone ammunition
Such rounds are also being tested, and produced at least in initial batches, in Russia and the USA. According to the Ukrainian military journal “militarnyi”, Russia has been testing a multi-projectile cartridge for months. Its developer, the Russian company JSC NPP, describes the ranges as acceptable. At a distance of 100 metres, the spread is said to open to 25 centimetres, which is supposed to multiply the probability of hitting a drone. This 5.45 x 39 millimetre cartridge is also said to suit standard Kalashnikovs, with no additional training needed.
More than a year ago, photos from Russia were already circulating online showing home-made micro batches of 5.45 cartridges loaded with birdshot.
The YouTube channel “AdministrativeResults” also published tests of a similar cartridge just recently. The product, called Drone Round, is marketed on the Instagram channel of the same name by the US companies Unlimited Ammo LLC from Arizona and Freedom Munitions from Idaho. For “AdministrativeResults”, the cartridge is a “drone killer” that “flips the equation”.
