Leonardo CEO: board of directors appoints Lorenzo Mariani to head the group
The new Leonardo CEO is Lorenzo Mariani, whose career has switched several times between the group and MBDA. At the same time, a “General Management” department is being created under Co-General Manager Gian Piero Cutillo.

Lorenzo Mariani takes the helm as Leonardo CEO: on 7 May, the board of directors of Leonardo appointed him Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and General Manager. With the appointment, he was granted all powers relevant to the management of the company and the group. At the same time, the board gave the green light for a new department called “General Management”. This unit reports directly to the CEO and General Manager and is headed by Gian Piero Cutillo as Co-General Manager.
From radar analyst to Leonardo CEO
Mariani completed his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering with honours in 1990. A year later he served in the Italian Navy, and in 1992 he joined Alenia Difensia, a company that is now part of the Leonardo group, as a radar systems analyst. He held further positions at Alenia Defensia until 2002, before moving to MBDA as Head of Product Strategy. As early as 2005, however, he returned to the Leonardo group’s orbit, this time at SELEX Sistemi Integrati. After several management roles there, he worked directly for Leonardo for the first time in 2016, as Chief Commercial Officer (CCO).
Just one year later, his CCO role was complemented by his appointment as CEO of Leonardo International. In 2020 the now experienced manager returned to MBDA, where he served as Executive Group Director Sales & Business Development and as Managing Director of MBDA Italia. Once again he did not stay away from Leonardo for long: as early as 2023 he accepted the offer to become Co-General Manager and Director of Business Operations. Last year he moved to MBDA once more – and now his path leads him back to Leonardo (yet again), this time as CEO.
