AI drone network: Bundeswehr successfully continues trials in Ohrdruf
After the first test series in the Altmark, more complex scenarios followed in Ohrdruf: the Bundeswehr’s AI-supported drone network hit static and moving targets. Panzerbrigade 45 in Lithuania is to be equipped with it in 2027.

An operational reconnaissance and strike network (Aufklärungs- und Wirkverbund, AWV) for AI-supported drone networks is to be available to Panzerbrigade 45 (45th Armoured Brigade) in Lithuania in 2027. With a view to this AI drone network, the Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces) has successfully continued its tests of unmanned systems at the Ohrdruf local training area. Positive test results are available, and the measures are on schedule.
Various reconnaissance systems and loitering munitions were tested. A first test series had taken place in early December 2025 at the Army Combat Training Centre on the Altmark training area; this time, more complex scenarios were on the programme.
What makes up the AI drone network
The AWV successfully engaged both static and moving targets under realistic conditions. At the same time, the trial examined how the Bundeswehr’s new drone forces operate tactically and according to which principles they are employed – another important step towards reinforcing Panzerbrigade 45 with drone forces in good time. During the trial, the network comprised several reconnaissance drones, AI-supported command software and so-called loitering munitions.
The trial was the responsibility of the Bundeswehr Planning Office, in close coordination with the German Army and the newly established Bundeswehr Innovation Centre. As in December 2025, the Command & Control Unmanned Management System Bundeswehr (C2-UMS Bw), developed in-house by the Bundeswehr, again played a central role. This software combines different drone types and systems into a common weapon system and integrates them into the Bundeswehr’s digital communications network.
