Drone swarm in a container: Dzyne Technologies presents Blitz and the Blitz Box

With Blitz, California-based Dzyne Technologies has unveiled an unmanned aircraft system (UAS) that ranges from single flights to a drone swarm. The manufacturer speaks of a new standard for “affordable mass” – a low-cost platform for large quantities that can be quickly tailored to different mission scenarios.

Folded, the airframe fits into an 80-litre backpack intended for small units; it is said to be ready for use in under two minutes. Scaled up, the system is also intended to support larger, distributed forces operating at risk of attrition.

Dzyne also showed the Blitz Box: an ISO container launcher with a built-in rail launch system puts dozens of Blitz drones into the air, which are to achieve mass effects in a synchronised manner.

Under the US armed forces' UAS classification, Blitz belongs to the Group 1 category of expendable UAS. This covers systems weighing no more than 9 kilograms (20 lb), flying at a maximum of 186 km/h (100 kn) and at altitudes of up to 365 metres above ground level (1,200 ft).

Blitz flies at 75 to 140 km/h, has a range of 80 to 150 kilometres, carries a payload of up to 2,270 grams (5 lb) and stays airborne for one to two hours. Dzyne also points to the quiet electric propulsion and the low signature.

The aircraft are controlled via the Android Team Awareness Kit (ATAK) and MAVLink integration – platform- and network-agnostic technology stacks that are increasingly being used by US security agencies.
