Loitering munition from the main battle tank: GDLS and Aerovironment unveil PERCH launch system

Firing Switchblade 300 and 600 directly from the Abrams or Stryker: the PERCH kit from GDLS and Aerovironment turns loitering munition into vehicle armament. It was shown at the US Army's MARS event in Fort Hood.

A jointly developed launch system for loitering munitions has been unveiled – as Aerovironment (AV) and General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS), which work together as strategic partners, already announced in December. Its full name is “Precision Effects & Reconnaissance, Canister-Housed” (PERCH). The system was demonstrated for the first time in October at the US Army's “Machine Assisted Rugged Sapper” (MARS) event in Fort Hood, Texas.

Switchblade 300 and Switchblade 600, AV's loitering munitions, can be integrated into GDLS vehicles using the modular PERCH kit: into M1A2 Abrams SEPv3 main battle tanks as well as Stryker infantry carriers. This is intended to enable surveillance and firepower beyond line of sight. No welding or cutting is required for installation – PERCH replaces the Abrams' stowage box and is bolted to the existing mounting points. In future, the versions are to run on the computer systems already present in the vehicles.

With PERCH, units can employ Switchblade loitering munitions far forward on the battlefield while remaining protected and concealed themselves— Jim Pasquarette, Vice President of US Strategy and Business Development at GDLS
We have seen great interest from soldiers in this ready-made, effective concept and look forward to future demonstrations. Together with our partners at AV, we are creating the conditions to win on the modern battlefield.— Jim Pasquarette, GDLS

During the demonstration, which ran from 26 to 30 October, an Abrams fired one Switchblade 300 and one Switchblade 600 via PERCH. The two provided beyond-line-of-sight reconnaissance and over-the-horizon targeting of high-value targets, enabling the users to overcome a complex obstacle.

The integration of Switchblade 300 and 600 into General Dynamics Land Systems platforms through the modular PERCH kit offers immediate operational advantages – it extends reach and enables rapid, precise effects from protected positions— Brian Young, Senior Vice President of Loitering Munitions Systems at AV
