Reconnaissance drone MQ-4C Triton: Northrop Grumman flies Australia's first aircraft for the first time

The first MQ-4C Triton reconnaissance drone for Australia has made its maiden flight in Palmdale, California. Handover is to follow this year; the country has four systems under contract.

Reconnaissance drone MQ-4C Triton: Northrop Grumman flies Australia's first aircraft for the first time

A few weeks ago, Australia's MQ-4C Triton, a multi-intelligence drone, took off on its maiden flight at the Palmdale Aircraft Integration Center in California; Northrop Grumman completed it successfully. This is an important step towards delivery of Australia's first reconnaissance drone of this type, due later this year.

Australian mission scenarios range from humanitarian assistance and disaster relief to monitoring key sea lanes in the Indo-Pacific. Production of all four Tritons currently under contract for Australia is on schedule. Thanks to their sensors and communication nodes, the systems are to play an important role: they can make it easier to transfer data between different combat areas and across different mission requirements.

Air Marshal Robert Chipman, Chief of the Royal Australian Air Force, said: “Triton expands Australia's intelligence and surveillance capabilities by delivering reliable real-time information and thus greater situational awareness. Persistent surveillance enables better planning, which significantly improves joint military responses and operations.”

Australia runs the Triton cooperative programme jointly with the US Navy; the country played a decisive role in defining the system requirements. The defence forces of both nations will be able to share the data collected by their respective Tritons – an important capability in one of the most strategically significant regions of the world.
