Reconnaissance drones for Poland: Warsaw buys three MQ-9B SkyGuardian from General Atomics

After leasing MQ-9A Reapers since 2022, Poland is now turning to reconnaissance drones of its own: three MQ-9B SkyGuardian and two ground control stations go to the Ministry of National Defence. The country joins a growing list of customers.

The Polish Ministry of National Defence is acquiring three MQ-9B SkyGuardian drone systems, General Atomics Aeronautical Systems has announced. The MQ-9B is the manufacturer’s most advanced remotely piloted aircraft (RPA). In Poland, it will serve as the central platform among the reconnaissance drones, responsible for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR). The contract also includes two ground control stations (CGCS).

The MQ-9B scores on endurance and range. It takes off and lands autonomously, controlled solely via SATCOM (satellite communications). A detect-and-avoid system allows it to fly safely even in airspace that is not segregated.

David R. Alexander, President of General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, said:

“The MQ-9B SkyGuardian will provide Poland with persistent, multi-domain situational awareness that is essential to the country’s security”— David R. Alexander, President of General Atomics Aeronautical Systems
“SkyGuardian is a significant security tool, and we are pleased to further expand our close partnership with Poland.”— David R. Alexander, President of General Atomics Aeronautical Systems

From leasing to buying reconnaissance drones

Poland gained its first experience from 2022 with MQ-9A Reapers leased from the manufacturer. Because these missions were successful, the way was clear for the purchase of the MQ-9B.

The first customer was the British Royal Air Force, which received MQ-9B systems from 2022. Contracts also exist with Belgium, Canada, the Japan Coast Guard, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, Taiwan, India and the US Air Force, in this case to support Special Operations Command. This year, the MQ-9B also took part in several US Navy exercises, including “Northern Edge”, “Integrated Battle Problem” and “Group Sail”.
