Underwater drones for the Swedish Navy: the Swedish defence procurement agency FMV has signed a framework contract with Teledyne Gavia for portable, modular autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV). The portable AUV MCM can map the seabed rapidly; the system also delivers high-resolution sonar images and detects objects of various kinds.
What the underwater drones offer
Johan Björck, strategic buyer at FMV, described one of the advantages:
The system can be operated from platforms of different sizes and also from the quayside— Johan Björck, strategic buyer at FMV
Because other navies within NATO also use this AUV, it strengthens the interoperability of the Swedish Navy.
The framework contract is worth around 17 million euros; it runs until 2028 and can be extended. Both FMV and the Swedish Armed Forces can place call-off orders under it.
