About Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw)

The Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) is a higher federal authority based in Koblenz and reports directly to the Federal Ministry of Defence. It develops, tests and procures equipment and information technology for the German armed forces and supports these products throughout their service life. With around 7,900 employees it is one of Europe's largest technical authorities; the wider AIN organisation it leads has about 12,900 staff at 116 locations.

As the Bundeswehr's central buyer, the BAAINBw awards contracts for research, development, procurement and maintenance to industry. It oversees the Bundeswehr technical and research centres, among them WTD 61 in Manching for aircraft and unmanned aerial systems and WTD 91 in Meppen for weapons and ammunition.

Unmanned systems and drone defence have become a major part of its portfolio. In February 2024 it signed a contract with Rheinmetall for 19 Boxer vehicles with the Skyranger 30 air-defence turret, in 2025 it commissioned Hensoldt to upgrade the ASUL counter-small-drone system in use since 2022, and in November 2025 it contracted MBDA for the DefendAir missile. In February 2026 it concluded framework contracts for loitering munitions with Helsing (HX-2) and Stark (Virtus), followed in April 2026 by a framework contract with Rheinmetall for the FV-014.
