The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has awarded Saab a counter-drone contract: it covers a mobile and modular counter-unmanned aircraft system (C-UAS).

It is to protect both the Swedish armed forces and civilian infrastructure from drone threats. The contract is worth around 2.6 billion Swedish kronor (around 240 million euros); deliveries are scheduled for 2027 to 2028.

Saab is developing and implementing the C-UAS system in close coordination with the FMV and the Swedish armed forces. The aim is cost-effective protection against modern drone threats that extends and complements Sweden's existing air defence and counter-drone capacity.

With this contract, Sweden receives a state-of-the-art, mobile and modular counter-unmanned aircraft system. This technology improves airspace security by detecting, tracking and neutralising unmanned threats. It can also be easily integrated with other systems— Carl-Johan Bergholm, head of Saab business area Surveillance

How Saab's counter-drone system works

As a modular, mobile platform, the Saab C-UAS is specifically designed to detect and defeat small to medium-sized drones flying at low altitude. Saab's own sensors and effectors are combined with third-party technologies into an interoperable overall solution that can be integrated into existing defence systems.
