Counter-UAS: Hensoldt expands ASUL on behalf of the Bundeswehr
Operational experience and new technology are being incorporated into an upgrade of the Bundeswehr's ASUL system. Hensoldt has received the contract for expanding the counter-UAS system, and further upgrade stages are already planned.

The procurement office of the Bundeswehr (German armed forces) has commissioned manufacturer Hensoldt with a functional expansion of its counter-UAS system. It concerns ASUL (Abwehr-System kleine Unbemannte Luftfahrzeuge, a defence system against small unmanned aerial vehicles). According to a recent press release, operational experience and technical developments are to be used to “further increase the effectiveness of the system” and to “significantly improve the protection of deployed forces”.
ASUL is embedded in a holistic approach to air defence. Thanks to its modular design, it defends against so-called “small Unmanned Aircraft Systems” (sUAS), i.e. small unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). Radar systems and other sensors work together with a growing range of effectors. In this way, sUAS can be detected, classified and identified in real time and then effectively engaged.
Counter-UAS in service with the troops since 2022
The Bundeswehr has been using the system since its introduction in 2022. According to the press release, ASUL “has already proven itself as an effective counter-drone system in a large number of missions”. The insights gained, together with current technological developments, form the basis for targeted further development intended to tailor the system even better to the troops' operational requirements.
The plan is to exploit the modular system approach as far as possible and to create leeway in the type, scope and performance of sensors and effectors. Further expansions are already planned.
With the project, the Bundeswehr wants to expand its counter-UAS capabilities and be able to respond more quickly to dynamic threats in the airspace. The aim is to make a “significant contribution to the safety of soldiers”.
