Jet-powered interceptor drone: Ukraine approves Alexa Spatium for its armed forces

Fast Russian kamikaze drones are the main target: with Alexa Spatium, Ukraine receives its first interceptor drone with a turbojet. If it misses its target, it can return. The ministry is silent on speed, range and altitude.

A new speed class is joining Ukrainian counter-drone defence: Alexa Spatium is the first Ukrainian jet-powered interceptor drone type that the armed forces are permitted to use. The compact, domestically developed interceptor drone is intended primarily against fast Russian kamikaze drones. If an interception attempt fails, it can fly back and be used again.

The Ministry of Defence explicitly lists Geran-3, Geran-4, Geran-5 and Shahed-131 as possible targets. Alexa Spatium is also said to be able to engage reconnaissance drones, rotary-wing aircraft and other aerial targets. According to the ministry, it is furthermore intended to be used against smaller targets on land and at sea.

Turbojet propulsion

The drone, measuring around 1.5 by 1.7 metres, is powered by a turbojet intended to deliver high speed and high operating altitude. The Ukrainian Ministry of Defence has not, however, disclosed exact figures for maximum speed, range and flight altitude.

The composite structure, which is relatively light yet robust, is intended to provide high manoeuvrability. The speed envelope is broad: according to the manufacturer, Alexa Spatium not only flies very fast but can also fly relatively slowly if required – saving fuel and extending endurance.

The drone searches for and engages targets using TV and infrared sensors, complemented by systems for control and video transmission. It can be flown either along pre-programmed coordinates or under direct control.

Warheads by target type

Depending on the target, Alexa Spatium can be fitted with different warheads; high-explosive fragmentation, shaped-charge and thermobaric variants are named. The payload weight has not been made public. According to the Ministry of Defence, however, it is sufficient to engage various aerial targets effectively.

Unlike classic single-use interceptor drones, Alexa Spatium is reusable. If the intended target is not engaged, it flies back to the launch area and is ready for another mission. Depending on the mission, the system therefore serves either as an effector or is recovered after an aborted or failed interception attempt.

Catapult launch within minutes

The logistical footprint was also deliberately kept small. A pickup truck is enough to transport the entire system. The drone is launched from a mobile catapult which, according to the manufacturer, is ready for use within a few minutes.

Both preparation and launch are carried out entirely by remote control. This is intended to allow a position to be set up quickly after arrival, an interception mission to be flown and the unit then to relocate. This matters because Russian reconnaissance and long-range strike assets constantly threaten Ukrainian air defence positions.

Alongside high mobility, the Ministry of Defence highlights the modular design, the largely automated processes and the low effort needed to prepare a launch position as further key advantages.

The interceptor drone as a layer of air defence in its own right

Alexa Spatium is a further step in the massive expansion of unmanned air defence of the Ukrainian armed forces. Interceptor drones are meant above all to take on targets that are economically problematic to engage with classic surface-to-air missiles. At the same time, the new systems need enough speed to intercept more powerful and ever faster Russian drones.

The step from propeller to jet is therefore logical: more speed and operating altitude widen the target spectrum while reducing reaction time.

Figures from the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence show how great the demand has become: since the beginning of 2026, 413 unmanned aircraft systems have already been codified and cleared for use by the armed forces, almost all of them from domestic production.

Alexa Spatium now adds a new category to this arsenal – a fast, mobile and potentially reusable jet-powered interceptor designed specifically for the drone-versus-drone duel.
