Unmanned surface vessels for ASW frigates: Netherlands awards design to Dutch Naval Design

Twelve metres long, one per ASW frigate: unmanned surface vessels are being designed for the Royal Netherlands Navy. Dutch Naval Design has won the contract, and dipping sonars from Thales have been procured in parallel.

Unmanned surface vessels are planned for the new anti-submarine warfare (ASW) frigates of the Royal Netherlands Navy: each frigate will receive a twelve-metre unmanned surface vessel (USV). The Dutch Ministry of Defence has now officially launched the design phase; the contract went to Dutch Naval Design (DND), a consortium of the Ministry of Defence, industry, academia and various research institutions.

Several DND partners had submitted the joint proposal under the name USV Alliance. The participating companies and research institutions differ in size, technical focus and professional background. Together they bring the capabilities, know-how and expertise required for the project.

The development of the new twelve-metre USVs must already take into account that various new systems are to be integrated. One of them is the Compact Flash Sonar from Thales Underwater Systems France. Such dipping sonars enlarge the frigate's surveillance area without revealing its own position. The procurement of these sonar systems was also contractually agreed today.

Unmanned surface vessels in anti-submarine warfare

USVs are to play a central role in anti-submarine warfare in future. The Royal Netherlands Navy can use them, among other things, to detect and track hostile submarines. In sea areas with increased submarine activity, the USVs also have a deterrent effect. This considerably increases the effectiveness and efficiency of maritime operations. With these vessels, the new ASW frigates extend their reach and respond better at the same time, which lastingly strengthens the operational performance of the maritime forces.
