Combat drone CA-1 Europa: Helsing unveils autonomous combat aircraft at Grob Aircraft in Tussenhausen

With the CA-1 Europa, Helsing presents a full-size combat drone that combines the Centaur AI pilot with Grob Aircraft's aircraft-building expertise. The jet is to fly in series-ready form in four years.

AI specialist Helsing today presented its first autonomous combat aircraft: the combat drone is named CA-1 Europa. The futuristic full-size jet study was ceremonially unveiled in Tussenhausen, on the premises of Helsing subsidiary Grob Aircraft. The jet is to take off in series-ready form in just four years.

Over recent years, Helsing has built up extensive know-how in AI-supported air combat systems. At its core is the Centaur AI pilot. Together with Saab, it was demonstrated in flight aboard a Gripen fighter back in the spring. The CA-1 Europa now combines Centaur's autonomy with the aircraft-building expertise Grob Aircraft has developed over decades.

Combat drone of the 3- to 5-tonne class

The aircraft is being developed for the 3- to 5-tonne class. Its design is modular and scalable and tailored throughout to a resilient European supply and logistics chain. Both design and testing take place at the Tussenhausen site.

The CA-1 Europa is designed as a versatile multi-role jet for the high subsonic range. According to Helsing, it combines “a mass-producible, cost-efficient airframe with world-leading software for situational awareness and mission management”. The platform is to be flexibly configurable, operating alone or in a swarm, and ready for reconnaissance, support or precision strikes deep in enemy territory.

For Torsten Reil, co-founder and co-CEO of Helsing, Europe's position is at stake: “Unmanned combat aircraft are crucial for European air superiority. Europe must neither fall behind here nor become dependent. With the Helsing CA-1, we are making sure that does not happen.”

Stephanie Lingemann, Senior Director Air Domain at Helsing, added: “The future of military aviation lies in mass-available systems in which software and AI are the decisive technologies. CA-1 is based on exactly this vision.”
