Unmanned systems for logistics: EDA selects Schiebel Camcopter S-100 for programme under HEDI
The EDA wants to trial unmanned systems in cross-domain logistics and has chosen Schiebel's Camcopter S-100 as its preferred solution. Testing with the Italian Army takes place in June and July 2025, including last-mile resupply.

Under the umbrella of the Hub for European Defence Innovation (HEDI), the European Defence Agency (EDA) has launched a programme for unmanned systems: “Autonomous Systems for Cross-Domain Logistics (Air and Land)”. As the preferred solution in the category of heavy vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), the choice fell on the Camcopter S-100 from Schiebel.
Unmanned systems under test: Italy hosts the 2025 trials
The large-scale initiative is hosted by the Italian Army. Its focus is on testing unmanned aerial (UAS) and ground systems (UGS) together. Several simulated missions will be tested in June and July 2025 – including resupply over the “last mile” in a hostile environment.
The S-100 was selected for the category that calls for a payload of more than 50 kilograms. During the tests it will fly alongside three UGS and two smaller UAS.
HEDI aims to integrate new technologies into military applications faster and better. To this end, the programme relies on immersive, close-to-reality tests conducted in an agile and collaborative environment.
“This programme is the first of its kind within the EDA and follows a series of successful contract awards to Schiebel,” says Hans Georg Schiebel, Chairman of the Schiebel Group, putting the selection into context. He continues: “In addition to the new contract with the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA), we have also become part of the EU Defence Fund consortia Seacure and Optimus. With our many years of experience, technical maturity and proven performance, the S-100 is the logical choice. We look forward to demonstrating our capabilities.”
