MQ-9B SkyGuardian flies for the first time with PT6 E engine from Pratt & Whitney Canada

A 44-minute first flight is said to have proven the suitability of the new powerplant: General Atomics has tested the MQ-9B with a PT6 E turboprop that promises one third more power. The SeaGuardian is also set to receive the engine.

The MQ-9B SkyGuardian remotely piloted aircraft from General Atomics Aeronautical Systems has recently flown with a PT6 E-Series turboprop engine from Pratt & Whitney Canada. The first flight of the MQ-9B with the PT6 engine lasted 44 minutes and was attended by representatives of both companies. According to a company press release, it demonstrated that the engine is fit for purpose. In future, it is also to be used in the MQ-9B SeaGuardian.

David R. Alexander, President of General Atomics, commented: “We are very pleased to see the PT6 engine on our MQ-9B aircraft. We have been working with Pratt & Whitney for years, particularly on our jet-powered Avenger, and we have a very productive partnership.” He added: “The first flight is an important milestone for MQ-9B SkyGuardian and SeaGuardian customers and for missions that require additional power. In addition, customers who choose the Pratt & Whitney engine benefit from the low maintenance costs.”

More power for future MQ-9B missions

The PT6 E-Series is a versatile family of turboprop engines that brings significant performance improvements to future MQ-9B missions. Compared with the MQ-9B's current engine, the PT6 makes a 33 per cent increase in power possible. In addition, there is an advanced dual-channel full authority digital engine control.

As General Atomics' next-generation RPA, the MQ-9B stands out for its exceptionally long endurance and range. Take-off and landing are automatic, and the system can be controlled exclusively via SATCOM. It is already in service in Japan and the USA, and deliveries to the United Kingdom are under way. Contracts also exist with Belgium, Canada, Taiwan and the US Air Force in support of Special Operations Command.
